Let’s start by setting up a masked IP address. You may
wonder why this is so important. The IP (internet protocol) address
is a set of four numbers that identify your computer over the internet.
i.e. 80.46.172.95 If anyone wants to access your computer for a
set purpose they will need to enter your computers specific IP address.
Fair enough, so why mask the address. Two reasons, unless you have
a static IP address every time your computer connects to the internet
it is given a new IP address. The other is that remembering a set
of numbers is more difficult than remembering a word.
You will first need to set up an account with someone like http://www.no-ip.com.
This is a fairly simple process. If you get stuck there is lots
of usful information on the site. Remember to set up at least one
host.
Once the account has been set up you will want to download the
IP client that updates your mask name everytime you IP address changes.
This can be obtained from download.com or by clicking this link.
Once the software has been installed and you have entered your account
detail you will be presented with the hosts your want to update.

When your host has got a smiley face the client is
working correctly. No we have this set up we want no-ip client to
run when ever we connect to the internet. There are two ways to
do this and they are both found under options.

Because I am running Windows XP Pro I am running no-ip
as a system service. This will work for both the Home and Pro editions
of XP also Windows NT and Windows 2000. If you are using a Windows
9x or Windows ME system tick the "Run on startup" option.
We now lets get started on the webserver! Page
